Pre-Kindergarten

Textured Leaf Bowls: An Exploration of Textures

In the elementary years play is so important. Play develops imagination and strength. We spend a lot of time in prekindergarten observing the world around us and playing with different materials to explore their properties. In this lesson students learn that artists observe the world around them.

Pirate Ships

Pre-kindergarten students created paper mache pirate ships during this unit on pirates. We read stories about high sea adventuring pirates that sparked our imagination. We practiced drawing, coloring and cutting out geometric shapes as we filled our hand-made treasure chest full of gems! After creating two-dimensional renditions of our ships using oil pastels and liquid watercolor paints we embarked on this paper mache voyage!

A Unit on the USPS

In pre-kindergarten we talk a lot about the different parts and members of communities. On this particular year we focused on the USPS. This unit fell around Valentines day. We took full advantage of this by mailing a giant envelope of art to our families. Students learned about how mail travels in the United States. This was a project close to my heart as my father was a letter carrier!

Painting at an Easel

Picture

Painting at easels hones strength and fine motor skills. Art making should be experiential and these art making practices should be varied and broad. I try to give my students a multitude of art making experiences that exercise different types of problem solving strategies.
