The beginning of the 2022-2023 school year started with Zen Tangle inspired art making. As a, "getting to know you", exercise, students played a game of Jenga at each table. Each Jenga block was labeled with a number. Numbers corresponded with a zen tangle design and a question to answer. Students shared a bit about themselves with their classmates while adding line designs to a cube template. Zen tangle cubes were completed and brought together to form a collaborative sculpture series. After completing these mini cubes, students created a 12 x 12 inch line design project. Students considered line weight, variety and value while working on these. Artworks demonstrate a knowledge of rhythm, movement and unity. I am so proud of you Studio art 1 and I cannot wait to see what we can accomplish with the rest of this school year.
Studio Art 1 Quote Posters
Studio art 1 students chose a quote to turn into a poster design. They honed typography skills, such as bubble and block lettering, to make the quote’s most important words stand out. Students also considered how pairing illustrations and certain color palettes with their text could reinforce their quote’s meaning. Fantastic job studio art 1!
Reduction Printmaking
Students in Studio Art 1 learned about the reduction printmaking process so that they could create a series of prints that utilize different layered inks. Artists considered positive and negative space so that they could leave and take away different sections of their linocuts to create an image. The prints showed an understanding of color, line and the importance of good craftsmanship.
Animal Portraiture
Students in Studio Art 1 learned the grid drawing technique so that they could create a scaled up drawing of a photograph. Artists considered value, texture and composition so that they could create a photorealistic image of an animal. Grid drawing emphasizes the idea that problem solving can be made easier when the process is broken down into smaller more manageable chunks.
Elements of Art - Sketchbook Assignment
In their sketchbooks, students defined the elements of art and emphasized their meaning with collage and drawings.

Color Wheel Mandala
After learning about Tibetan sand mandalas, students created a mandala inspired color wheel. Artworks showed primary, secondary and tertiary colors as well as tints and shades. Designs show pattern details and radial symmetry. Each mandala was a tribute to a influential person.
