In first grade we often focus on building knowledge and skill sets in color theory. In my first grade curriculum there is usually a variety of projects that require that students learn about the color wheel. We talk about warm and cool colors and often create art with our painted papers. We also create a color wheel inspired art work. In past years that has taken the form of hot air balloons, umbrellas and dream catchers. This year we created color wheel lions. I wan't students to understand that artists create, invent and experiment with materials, that artists are motivated by creative communication and that color can evoke mood.
Howardena Pindell Inspired Mixed Media
First grade learned about Howardena Pindell so that they could create a paper collage that is inspired by her art. They learned about color so that they could create warm and cool color paintings to use in their collage. They learned about space so that they could overlap pieces to form a pleasing composition.
